Gardening Tasks During the Year

Your Essential Guide to April & May in the Garden

As the soil warms and the days lengthen, the garden enters its most explosive period of growth. April and May are the "engine room" of the gardening year, transitioning from spring preparation to the first major planting and maintenance windows. Download my sequential guide below to stay ahead of the season.

Essential Maintenance Tips

  • Watering Wisely: Aim to water early in the morning or late in the evening to minimise evaporation. Direct water to the roots rather than the foliage.
  • Weeding: Keep on top of the weeding, especially around the patio areas, any stone or gravel paths. Use weed spray where appropriate.
  • Pressure Washing: Clean patios and driveways ahead of the longer warmer (hopefully!) weekend. Remove alge and blackspots, Spray and then pressure wash.
  • Pest Vigilance: Watch out for viburnum beetle and lily beetle grubs, which start appearing this month. Wash off aphid colonies with a hose or remove them by hand before they multiply.
  • Wildlife Balance: Consider leaving some areas of your lawn uncut to provide a habitat for pollinators and other wildlife.

Happy Gardening! Keep your secateurs sharp and your hoe ready—the busiest time of the year is here!

May to August Grass Moss Treatment Plan

Moss and weeds get everywhere, including your grass. At times there can be more moss than actual grass. Taking care of a lawn that’s being staged-managed by weeds and moss can feel like a losing battle, but it’s usually just a sign that your grass is "starving" or the soil is too compacted and damp.

Moss thrives where grass struggles—specifically in shade, damp conditions, or acidic soil.

Roof Moss Treatment

Moss builds up on roofs because of a combination of environmental conditions and the physical properties of the roofing materials. It typically thrives in cool, damp, and shaded areas where moisture remains trapped for long periods.

Cleaning moss off a roof is a big job that requires a balance between being thorough and being gentle. If you’re too aggressive, you can damage the shingles and shorten the roof's lifespan.

Key Factors Contributing to Moss Build-up. Excessive Shade, Persistent Moisture, Porous Roofing Materials, Trees and Foliage & Poor Ventilation.

The UK Evergreen Shrub Guide

The document below provides you with a comprehensive guide to creating a evergreen boarder / fence line. Creating a living wall that provides permanent privacy, noise reduction, and a robust windbreak without the need for trellis support or invasive drilling. This guide focuses on hardy, non-climbing evergreen species specifically selected for the UK climate. These plants are chosen for their ability to support local biodiversity through nectar and nesting sites while acting as a sustainable, year-round boundary.
